Anastasia swung her bag from her shoulder and it fell to the grassy floor with a heavy thud from the extra set of training weights that she had packed inside. She had needed to find a bag reinforced enough to carry the weights with out tearing. Even that had been a bit of an investment, but it had been worth it in the end.
She pulled out from the bag the extra set, and a few towels. She was going to need them by the time she was finished here. Anastasia stood up and stretched out her back, and did a few light katas and sparring forms to warm up and get some blood flowing. After that she turned to the very reason she had come to this place.
Leona Falls.
They were a decently sized waterfall that sprayed tons of water down into a large lake, and then drained down a river that flowed southward through the woods. Anastasia took a strengthening breath and then flew straight towards the waters. She picked a point that was about midway from the top and bottom, then she inserted herself in the waters and crossed her legs, adopting a meditative seat.
The frigid waters of the waterfall chilled Ana deep into her bones. The blasting pressure and weight of several tons of water battering down on her threatened to crush her into the water and drown her mercilessly. But still she refused to relent. She held her focus with a fierce single minded determination, and blanked out everything else.
She sat on a water-slicked rocky outcropping beneath the cascade of Leona Falls. She had her legs crossed, and her hands folded in her lap. She had to contend not just with the pressure of the water, but also the weight of her training gear. And even that was made heavier by being water logged. All of this crushing weight dragged down at her impossibly. Yet still she forced herself to sit under the torrential down pour, straight backed and stubborn.
The battering Ana had taken from the Namekian during their street fight had shown her just how much she needed to improve her core strengths. The Namekian had pushed Anastasia to use every bit of power she had, including her Adrenaline Rush. But the Namekian's own transformation surpassed Ana’s full power and had emerged from their clash victorious. It had been an excellent test for what Ana had always been concerned of. How well she would be able to stand up against those with an advantage in raw power. Which wasn't too badly, but not enough.
Ana had been able to withstand the Namekian’s attacks, but the effort had severely exhausted her. If- no. When Ana had to face an enemy with a higher power than her own, she wouldn’t be able to last in an extended bout. In a fight to the death, there was no way she would survive. She needed to compensate for that difference, and while she was on the right track with her Immovable Object defense, it simply wasn’t enough. No, she needed to strengthen it. Ana needed to make it more efficient so that she could last even longer against a superior opponent.
While Ana knew what she had needed to do, she did not have any ideas on how to go about pushing herself to that next level. She had reached a plateau simply practicing with the technique in the usual sparring match. Ana had even grown accustomed to keeping her Immovable Object defense activated for extended periods of time. She was now able to keep Immovable Object on almost indefinitely, strengthening her body against sudden impacts. But it wasn’t enough.
It was actually the very same Namekian that had defeated her who had told her about this method of water training. In a sparring match she had told them of her goal and her frustrating road block. In the spirit of competition, and encouraging Ana to come challenge them again with a rematch, they Namek shared with them the old training method. The people of Namek were closely tied to their planet and while Namek was considered beautiful and peaceful, it’s people also understood the brutality of nature. And the warriors of Namek taught themselves to train with their beautiful yet ferociously powerful home.
There had been a special place in Namek with a huge cascading waterfall that became the location for the warriors of old to train and strengthen their bodies. While living beings may tire, nature would not. The power of the waters cascading down was never ending. It’s crushing weight would never cease. A warrior could never hope to best the power of the falls, but they may stand against it, and hone their endurance with it’s help.
Ana had no way to go to this ancient training ground on a planet far away, but she was confident that she would be able to find a different waterfall on earth that would serve her purposes. And that was how she found Leona Falls. Leona Falls was not huge, nor grand and imposing. But it's waters still flowed fiercely and was more than sufficient for her needs. It also wasn't too far out of the way for her to travel to as well, making it's location very convenient.
Ana began to travel to Leona falls regularly as part of her training regimen. She would travel through the woods at a decent marching pace, practice her forms and attacks when she arrived at the falls. Then she would take brief break for a meal, then would move on to the ki training under the falls.
At first she hadn’t been able to channel her ki properly to keep a constant shield. She had always defended against separate impacts, not a single never ending pressure. Ana had struggled just to say under the waterfall. Any gap in her concentration would force her to succumb to the never ending weight of the water, and she was instantly sent tumbling head over heels into the roiling water where she couldn't only be buffeted about by the rolling pressures of the water until she was washed away far enough to breach the surface again.
She had relied on her body’s physical strength at first, but eventually managed to figure out how to incorporate her physical stamina and her ki together in Immovable Object. However, it was a wild strain on her energy and she could never hold it long. She would burn through her reserves at an alarming pace and then the waters would over come her defenses and she'd find herself washed away again, forcing her to start over.
Ana’s body shivered violently under the cold. In the past she would be practically vibrating in her skin, her body desperate for warmth under the icy Leona Falls. That also sapped away at her strength and left her numb and weak. She had been forced to stop the training to warm by a fire several time when she felt her fingers going numb and saw the blue tinge of coming frost bite. This hindered her progress, but eventually she learned to reach deeper inside herself for the wellspring of ki in her core. She learned how to draw upon it, not just for physical strength, but for warmth against the frigid chill. By utilizing the burning force of her ki, she could push it through out her for warmth as well as strength.
Ana hadn’t realized how multi-faceted this training technique would be. She had severely underestimated its complexity. But that had only excited her more. Made her want to rise to the challenge that it presented to her. There was so much more to training than just the physical strength and stamina training of the military. There was so much more technique and theory out there now that she had expanded her horizons. Anastasia was learning so much more than just combat.
Meeting Zerori and learning about her ability to literally create things from thin air alone was amazing, and opened her eyes to all sorts of new possibilities. She had yet to get around to approaching Zerori for lessons. She wasn't even sure if it could even be taught or if Zerori would even teach her. But the idea alone was interesting.
Now, weeks into the practice, Ana was capable of channeling her ki throughout her body completely. It kept her strong against the constant press of the waterfall. It bolstered her against the chill. And it became second nature for her. She hardly needed to focus to keep the energy coursing through her body. Ana almost found it soothing. She entered an almost trance-like state now. Simply her, the drum of the water, and the river of her ki inside her.
It seemed that the inner-peace was an integral part this form of training. She admired it, and grew to love it in a way. It was beautiful. So different from the brute force and chaos that had been her life so far. Ana had never been able to succumb to the war-mongering mentality of the army. Neither was she able to embrace the mindless aggression of the pits. Instead she had been forced to shut it out. To shut it out, and shut herself down. This felt better in a way she didn't have the words to express.
Ana still struggled to find herself. Who was she if she wasn't a soldier. If she wasn't a pit fighter. Who was she with out the command of others. What did she want? Ana didn't know. The more she thought upon it, the more she realized that she spent life going through the motions. She had no passions or goals. She wasn't sure if she even enjoyed fighting. It was simply that she didn't know anything else. The more she pondered on this the more confused she became. The time under the waterfall made her confront such thoughts that she had never considered before. They made her uncomfortable, which even that concept she needed to confront.
But not any more for today. She could feel her energy start to flag, and her body sink under the weight of Leona Falls's eternal pressure. She needed to stop.
Ana let out a slow sigh as she pulled herself out from her trance. Carefully she floated out from under the falls, and over to the pile of towels and fresh clothes waiting for her. Ana landed on the shore, water dripping from her soaked clothes. She stripped off the wet clothes, heedless of any who might be around to see her in her state of nudity. She tossed aside her waterlogged weighted gear and then dried herself off liberally with the towel, teeth chattering violently. When she was dry and dressed in a fresh set of weighted gear Ana was finally able to start warming up. It wasn't enough, though. She still felt a deep chill.
A warm meal was definitely in order. Maybe some kind of soup or chowder she could drink to warm her up inside. Anastasia nodded to herself and packed up her things. Her clothes were still wet, and she didn't want to put that in her pack lest she soak everything inside as well. So she wrung out the extra moisture she could from her weighted gear an placed them in a spare bag that she could attach to the side of her pack. It wasn't a perfect solution, but at least it would prevent every item in her bag from becoming musty.
Anastasia slung her bag over her shoulder and floated upwards. spinning slightly in a cork screw. She rose above Leona Falls, and looked down at it from above. The spray of the falls caused a rainbow to shimmer out over the lake at it's bottom. It was a beautiful sight that Anastasia let herself enjoy for a moment longer. She wondered if any flew by here like she was now, they would have seen her sitting in the middle of that rainbow. The image made her laugh inside just a little bit.
Anastasia shook her head and then turned from the water, and took off with a sudden blast of ki towards the nearest village she knew that she could get a half decent bowl of chicken noodle soup and cup of hot chocolate.
